ESSENTIAL DOCUMENTS – CIVIL WEDDINGS

The following documents are required for a civil wedding in Santorini, Greece that is legally valid worldwide.

Bride and groom’s passports.

a. Photo copy of each passport
b. No apostille necessary
c. No translation necessary

Marriage License/Registration of Marriage from your City Hall – OR - “Single Status” letter (also known as “Letter of No Impediment” OR CNI – “Certificate of No Impediment”) separate letters for the bride & the groom. The “Single Status” letter is a document issued from your local government/town hall/registrar’s office that ensures that there is not a problem for you to get married. Kindly take note that depending on your country of origin, these documents may have a time limit of validity (expiration date).

d. Documents to be authenticated with the apostille (more information below)
e. Important: The apostille must be issued by the state/country where your document was issued.
f. Translation into the Greek language (more information below)

IMPORTANT NOTES:

i. European & US citizens MUST obtain a Marriage License and NOT a Single Status letter.
ii. US citizens must ensure the Marriage License states the name of the person who they wish to marry.
iii. Couples who will remain in Santorini for less than 24 hours in total MUST obtain a Marriage License and NOT a Single Status Letter.
iv. Under Greek Law a Marriage License has a 3 month validity only. In some countries & certain US States a Marriage License can be obtained with a 6-month validity. This is acceptable by Greek Authorities as long as the 6-month validity is clearly printed on the document and has not expired before the date of the wedding.

Birth Certificates for each individual.

g. Documents to be authenticated with the Apostil (more information below)
h. Certificates to be issued no more than 6 months prior to the wedding.
i. Important: The Apostil must be issued by the state/country where your document was issued. For example, if you possess a British birth certificate, the Apostil must be issued in Britain. This is regardless of where you
currently reside.
j. Translation into Greek language (more information below)

Divorce Certificate/Decree in the event there are any.

k. Photo copy sufficient
l. No Apostil necessary
m. No translation necessary
n. Original divorce certificate must be brought with you (however this document is not kept by the Santorini
Town Hall).

Xerox copies of passport’s of the 2 witnesses
Please bring copies with you to Santorini. No pre-approval by the celebrant necessary.
 

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  1. Translations can be prepared at your local Greek Embassy or Consulate. In the event that you do not have access to a Greek Embassy or Consulate, you can send the documents via registered mail or courier and we will take care of the legal translation (there is a 200 euro fee for this service).

  2. Apostille information: http://travel.state.gov/hague_foreign_docs.html#states. You will be able to find where you need to go or who to contact in any participating country for the apostille at this website link.

  3. Certain documents may be “named” differently in different countries or have country/state specific requirements. Please inquire within your region for applicable information.

  4. Once you have all documents with their authentication (with apostille) in English, please fax to us for review PRIOR to translating. Once we contact you that all is fine with the paperwork, you can then proceed with translation. Fax #: +30 22860 22359 attn: Mrs. Bozena / Wedding Director

  5. Once translation is completed, kindly fax all copies (English & Greek) to us at least 20 days prior to the wedding date. Same fax as above.

  6. Please bring all your original documents with you to Greece.

  7. All original documents (in English and Greek) will be acquired by the Santorini Town Hall for proper documentation. Should you want to keep your originals, please obtain “notarized copies” of your original documents and use those as your “original” wedding documents and have those accompanied by the relative apostilles and translated.
     

  8. The day after your ceremony you will receive an officially signed marriage certificate in Greek.
     

Your marriage certificate will be valid internationally.
