Santorini Oia: It lies on the northern side of the island, on
top of the cliff. Oia offers a
different angle of view on the volcano, the neighbour
small islands of Palia and Nea Kameni and Thirassia,
a quite impressive one. It is a famous picturesque village and
probably the most enchanted place in Santorini.
It is built in the traditional architecture with whitewashed
buildings carved into the rock, blue
domed churches in narrow streets and sun-bathed
verandas. There used to be 79 churches in this small
village, but during the earthquake of 1956, many of them
destroyed. However the settlement was rebuilt and today attracts
many tourists worldwide, who prefer a more calm and peaceful
place from Fira and a romantic atmosphere.
You may visit the Maritime Museum, established
in 1951, displaying features from the marine life of the area
(Tel +30 22860 71156) and the little chapel of St. Nicholas
built on the rock.
From Oia there are two paths with steps, one leading to
Armeni beach and the other going to Ammoudi
beach, where is the small harbour of Oia. From this
port small boats may take you to the opposite island of
Thirassia. There are a few fish-taverns where one can taste
excellent sea food and local wine. Both beaches are only
accessible by foot (220-280 steps down)
The highest attraction of the village is the fabulous
sunset. A square overlooks the sea and visitors
may observe a truly fantastic sunset well worth saving
on film. The most popular spot to watch it is by the
Kastro walls. During summer time hundreds of tourists flock to
the edge of the village to enjoy the amazing view of sun diving
into the open sea.
At Oia you will find plenty of tourist shops, taverns and
restaurants, cafes, and some of the most beautiful hotels in the
island. There are also enough art galleries for
such a small area, as many artists inspired by the beauties of
the village and settled here. |
