How to Go to Santorini - Greece
Santorini

If you could choose only two or three places that are worth seeing in Greece, Santorini should be one of them. The beauty of this island is a wild, otherworldly beauty created by an apocalyptic upheaval and by a volcano that lies in the middle of the island's bay. Around it, like a crescent moon, is the remains of the island that sank - a huge rock, multicolored, black, red, gray, and brownish. High up on the ridge of the rock are the white crown of houses, arches, terraces, and churches with their domes. These are the towns of Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli, and Ia. Any visit to Santorini will be unforgettable. You can enjoy a stroll in the charming alleyways of Fira, take a trip by car to Ia, go by boat to the volcano, and in the evening find whatever kind of entertainment that appeals to you most.

How to get  to Santorini - From Athens

There are boat services to Santorini from Piraeus' Port near Athens, provided by small ferries and large passenger boats. The trip by ferry is 9 to 10 hours and by high-speed ferry is 4 to 5 hours.

During the period April through October, it is possible to reach Paros, Naxos, Ios, Santorini, and Crete (Iraklio) by boat from Santorini. Information may be obtained from the Santorini Port Authority or any travel agent.

If you are considering traveling deck class, keep in mind that it is possible for the winds to be chilly even in July and August.

Olympic Airways and Aegean Cronus Airlines operate daily flights to Santorini from Athens International Airport at Spata. The flight is approximately 45 minutes long and the cost is around €100, one way. During the summer, flights to Santorini are available from Thessaloniki. The flight is approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hours long depending on the type of aircraft. There are also direct flights to Mykonos. There is a bus service that connects the town of Fira to the Santorini airport at Monolithos.

Getting Around:The island of Santorini is served by a network of buses. The routes as well as the timings change according to the season, but there is always a schedule posted at the main bus terminal in Fira. In the high season buses are more frequent and will take you to all of the island's major sites.

Taxis are available throughout the island. They wait at Santorini's port of Athinios after each ferry's arrival, at Fira's main square, and they tend to wait at Ia in the evenings after the sunset to carry tourists back to their hotels. When your ferry arrives in Athinios you can either take a taxi to the top of the caldera, to your hotel, or you can try to make arrangements with your hotel to have someone pick you up

About Santorini Island

SANTORINI SIGHTS AND ATTRACTIONS

The island is full of archaeological finds, of which the most significant are the Minoan City in Akrotiri and the ancient ruins of the City of Thera. Scattered throughout Santorini you can find historical churches, monasteries and Venetian castles such as the Gizi building in Fira, which has been converted into a cultural center. You should also visit the Archaeological, Folklore and Maritime Museums.

Santorini is also popular for its nightlife. In some areas you can find quite cafés and bars and others are packed with pubs, taverns and clubs offering intense nighttime entertainment.

Do not miss a visit to the isles of Nea Kameni, Palea Kameni and Thirassia, which are opposite the Western side of the island and were created by volcanic eruptions.

SANTORINI BEACHES

Several spectacular beaches are very distinctive in character due to the volcanic nature of the area, such as the Red and White Beaches in Akrotiri and the Black Beaches in Perissa, Perivolos, Monolithos and Kamari, as well as Vourvoulos Beach.
